Reasons to Move to San Antonio, Texas

Interested in moving to San Antonio but unfamiliar with the area? Here are a few reasons why you should call one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. your next home:

It’s spacious.

In the age of COVID-19, space is what people crave. And with such a low population density, San Antonio makes it easy to keep your distance from others, especially when new homes have everything you need to stay put—extra rooms for office space, backyards where you can retreat to nature and up your grill game, quiet surroundings, and subdivision-exclusive amenities such as pools, clubhouses, tennis and basketball courts, and playgrounds.

It’s affordable.

San Antonio has a remarkably low cost of living. It’s no wonder then why 66 new residents move here every day, attracting everyone from young professionals to retirees, from states such as California, Florida, Illinois, and New York, and from various places outside of the U.S., most notably Asian and Latin American countries. With plenty of inexpensive housing options and a home interest rate below 3%, San Antonio is a great place to use money you made selling your home in more expensive markets to start a business, or to just live a bit more comfortably. Not to mention, Texas has no income tax!

It’s rich in culture…

San Antonio is one of the oldest cities in America, teeming with history around every corner. From the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the old colonial Spanish missions (including the legendary Alamo) to the “Little Venice” that is the River Walk, San Antonio abounds in unique places, attracting millions of visitors a year. There’s plenty of venues for residents too, including James Beard-nominated restaurants, over 80 miles (and growing) of greenway trails for hiking and biking, annual cultural festivals like the Texas Folklife Festival and the city-wide Fiesta, several museums and numerous art galleries, among many, many more.

…and in amenities.

Being the 7th largest city in America, San Antonio has many of the conveniences a city dweller expects, from major grocery chains, including what according to many is America’s best supermarket chain, H-E-B, and other powerhouses such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Costco, and Walmart, to major car dealerships that sell luxury brands such as Ferrari, Maserati, Cadillac, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus, and more economical brands such as Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Toyota, and the like.

It’s family-friendly.

Area neighborhoods such as Stone Oak and Alamo Heights pride themselves on their desirable public schools, low crime rates, diverse boutiques, sizable malls such as The Shops at La Cantera and North Star Mall, and numerous nearby attractions, which include Six Flags Fiesta Texas, SeaWorld, the San Antonio Zoo, Natural Bridge Caverns, the Witte Museum, Morgan’s Wonderland, the Doseum, and many more, all of which can keep the whole family occupied.

It’s pleasant.

It’s no secret that it gets hot here for a couple of months out of the year, but it’s our mild winters that can make living here the envy of anyone settled where shoveling snow is the norm. Not many people can brag about being able to play 18 holes whenever they’d like through the winter months. Not to mention, because of its location and geography, you’ll never have to worry about extreme weather like earthquakes and hurricanes!

It’s economically robust.

Being in Texas, San Antonio is part of the second largest economy in the United States and the tenth largest economy in the world! It’s no wonder then why on average, 1,000 people are moving to Texas every day for its booming oil & gas (home to the world’s largest oil producing region), health care, agricultural, & military-adjacent industries. In fact, Texas’s economy has been so robust that it was able to weather the worst of the 2008 recession better than virtually every other state.

It’s a hub for health care…

With over 900 acres of hospitals, clinics, practices, schools, and other medical-related institutions, the South Texas Medical Center is the heart of San Antonio’s highly developed health care system, which offers multiple treatment options for whatever your health needs may be.

…and a destination for education.

There’s a range of reputable public and private institutions of higher learning that can satisfy a variety of educational and vocational goals, including the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A&M University-San Antonio, Trinity University, St. Mary’s University, the University of the Incarnate Word, Our Lady of the Lake University, and the Alamo Colleges.

Spurs.jpg

It loves to sport.

Although the overwhelming darling of San Antonio is its world champion Spurs, there are other professional sports besides basketball with franchises you can cheer on, such as its soccer club and its minor league baseball team. There’s also a couple of Division I college football teams you can get behind, and the annual Stock Show and Rodeo (a “sport” to many a Texan) and the 2025 Final Four it will be host to, among other such events, you can attend and enjoy while living here.

It’s close to many other notable attractions.

There are plenty of places beyond just outside the city where locals can sojourn. Popular day trip destinations include charming but bustling small towns such as Boerne, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg, and many natural oases such as spring-fed rivers and reservoirs like the Guadalupe and Medina Lake, respectively, and the 367 mile-long coastline of the Gulf of Mexico and its adjacent beaches. And other major cities such as Houston and the state capital Austin are but a few hours away.
